How to organise a tournament

A practical run sheet: choosing a format, sizing the day, entries, seeding, scoring and the things that go wrong.

The short version, until the full guide lands: work backwards from the clock. Count your playing surfaces, decide how long a match takes, and only then choose a format that fits. A knockout of n teams is n − 1 matches; double elimination is roughly 2n − 2; a round robin is n(n − 1) / 2.

Everything else — entries, seeding, tiebreakers, a plan for no-shows — is easier once the shape of the day is fixed.
