How double elimination works

Lose once and you are not out — you drop into the losers bracket. Lose there and you are finished. Because everyone except the eventual champion must lose twice, the format takes roughly 2n − 2 matches: 14 for eight entrants, 30 for sixteen, 62 for thirty-two. That is close to double the length of a straight knockout, so check your clock and your pitch count before committing.

The two brackets meet in the grand final. The winners-bracket side arrives unbeaten, so if the losers-bracket side wins that match both teams have one loss and a decider is played — the bracket reset. Our generator adds that extra match automatically, and only when it is actually needed.

Drops from the winners bracket are cross-paired on alternating rounds, which is the standard way of pushing early rematches as far apart as possible. It means a team you just beat is unlikely to be waiting for you one round later in the losers bracket.

Common questions

How long does double elimination take?

Roughly twice as long as single elimination. Eight teams need 14 matches rather than 7; sixteen need 30 rather than 15. At 20 minutes a match on two pitches, an eight-team double elimination is about two and a half hours.

What is a bracket reset?

The extra grand-final match played when the losers-bracket side wins the first grand final. Because the winners-bracket side had not lost at all, beating them once only levels the record — a decider is needed. It appears on the board marked If needed.

Is double elimination fairer?

It is more forgiving. One bad match, one injury or one unlucky draw no longer ends your tournament, so the eventual winner is more likely to be the strongest entrant. The price is time — and for very large fields, a lot of it.
