5 matches. The arithmetic never changes: every match eliminates exactly one team, and to be left with one champion you must eliminate the other 5. So a 6-team knockout is 6 − 1 = 5 matches, and no arrangement of the draw can make it more or fewer. Add a third-place playoff and the total becomes 6.
Because 6 is not a power of two, the bracket is drawn on a 8-team frame. That leaves 2 empty slots, which become byes — free passes into round two. By convention they go to the top 2 seeds, so round one is only 2 real matches rather than 4.

How many matches are in a 6 team bracket?
5. Each match removes one team and 5 of the 6 entrants have to go, so the total is fixed at 6 − 1. With a third-place playoff it becomes 6.
How many rounds is that?
3 — quarter-finals, semi-finals, final. Round one is only 2 real matches, because 2 teams have a bye.
Who gets the byes?
The top 2 seeds. A 6-team draw sits on a 8-team bracket, which leaves 2 empty slots, and giving them to the highest seeds is both the convention and the fairest option — it rewards ranking and keeps the strong entrants apart. Our generator does this automatically.
Can I run these 6 teams as double elimination instead?
Yes — switch the format in the generator. It becomes 10 matches instead of 5, because everyone bar the champion has to lose twice, plus one more if the grand final needs a reset. More on double elimination.
