How many matches in a 10 team bracket?

9 matches. The arithmetic never changes: every match eliminates exactly one team, and to be left with one champion you must eliminate the other 9. So a 10-team knockout is 10 − 1 = 9 matches, and no arrangement of the draw can make it more or fewer. Add a third-place playoff and the total becomes 10.

Because 10 is not a power of two, the bracket is drawn on a 16-team frame. That leaves 6 empty slots, which become byes — free passes into round two. By convention they go to the top 6 seeds, so round one is only 2 real matches rather than 8.

Round Matches played Teams through
Round of 16 2 (+6 byes) 8
Quarter-finals 4 4
Semi-finals 2 2
Final 1 1

How long will it take?

9 matches, run back to back. Pick your match length and how many pitches, courts or tables you have:

Match length 1 pitch 2 pitches 3 pitches
15 minutes 2h 15m1h 8m45m
20 minutes 3h1h 30m1h
30 minutes 4h 30m2h 15m1h 30m

Rough guide — it ignores changeovers, and rounds cannot overlap, so allow a little more.

10 team bracket questions

How many matches are in a 10 team bracket?

9. Each match removes one team and 9 of the 10 entrants have to go, so the total is fixed at 10 − 1. With a third-place playoff it becomes 10.

How many rounds is that?

4 — round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, final. Round one is only 2 real matches, because 6 teams have a bye.

Who gets the byes?

The top 6 seeds. A 10-team draw sits on a 16-team bracket, which leaves 6 empty slots, and giving them to the highest seeds is both the convention and the fairest option — it rewards ranking and keeps the strong entrants apart. Our generator does this automatically.

Can I run these 10 teams as double elimination instead?

Yes — switch the format in the generator. It becomes 18 matches instead of 9, because everyone bar the champion has to lose twice, plus one more if the grand final needs a reset. More on double elimination.

Can I download it as a PDF?

Yes — PDF and PNG, both at high resolution, plus a print-friendly version. Everything is generated in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and no account is needed.
