15 matches. The arithmetic never changes: every match eliminates exactly one team, and to be left with one champion you must eliminate the other 15. So a 16-team knockout is 16 − 1 = 15 matches, and no arrangement of the draw can make it more or fewer. Add a third-place playoff and the total becomes 16.
16 is a power of two, so the bracket fills perfectly: no byes, every team plays in round one, and each round halves the field cleanly all the way to the final.

How many matches are in a 16 team bracket?
15. Each match removes one team and 15 of the 16 entrants have to go, so the total is fixed at 16 − 1. With a third-place playoff it becomes 16.

Can I run these 16 teams as double elimination instead?
