Why bracket size matters

Brackets are built on powers of two — 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 — because every round halves the field. Land on one of those numbers and the draw fills perfectly. Land anywhere else and the bracket is drawn on the next size up, with the spare slots becoming byes for the top seeds.

The match total, though, never depends on the shape: a knockout of n teams is always n − 1 matches, because each one eliminates exactly one team. What the size changes is the number of rounds, and therefore how much of your day it eats.
