Seven. Every match eliminates exactly one team, and you need to eliminate seven of the eight to be left with a champion — so a knockout of n teams always needs n − 1 matches. Those seven run across three rounds: four quarter-finals, two semi-finals and the final. Add a third-place playoff and the total becomes eight.
A bye is a free pass into round two. Brackets are drawn on a power of two — 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 — so when your entry list is not one of those numbers the bracket is drawn on the next size up and the empty slots become byes. Twelve teams sit on a 16-team frame, which leaves four byes, and by convention they go to the top four seeds. Our generator does this automatically, and always gives the byes to the highest seeds so the draw stays fair.
About twice as many: 2n − 2. Everyone has to lose twice to be knocked out, apart from whoever finally wins. Eight teams means 14 matches instead of seven — plus one extra if the losers-bracket side wins the grand final and forces a bracket reset. Budget the time before you commit to it.
No account, and nothing is uploaded. The bracket is built and scored entirely in your browser, saved to that browser so it is still there when you come back, and only leaves your device if you choose to copy a share link — which encodes the tournament into the link itself.
